Why, you may ask? First and formost, the brilliant writing by star ('Edina') and creator Jennifer Saunders. Patsy and Edina are reprehensible, irresponsible, and totally engaging- characters which American sitcom writers have tried to create for YEARS, but who can't get past the 'everyone has to be loveable' edict passed down from the corporate gods (who fund these shows, and want EVERYONE to love them so they make money!) Secondly, the casting. Jennifer Saunders as Edina Monsoon is a hilarious, self-destructive force of nature, and has influenced everyone from Karen on 'Will and Grace' to Christine Baranski's soused best friend on 'Cybill'. Joanna Lumley as stoic, young man obsessed Patsy Stone shows us what life must REALLY be like for Ivana Trump and her ilk. Julia Sawahla as straight-laced, uptight Saffie (Edina's long-suffering daughter), June Whitfield as Edina's seemingly senile (but MUCH more on the ball than anyone realizes) mother, and Jane Horrocks as Edina's hopelessly inefficent (but, yet, secretly smarter than anyone thinks) Personal Assistant (P.A.), Bubble, round out the best ensemble cast since "All In The Family". No other show can make you feel so alive and so naughty at the same time while bending you over with laughter. So, sweetie darlings, light up a fag (or something a little more mindbending), pour yourself some Boli-Stoli (or, Verve and Bourb), and settle in for a bumpy, loud, garish, and totally satisfying ride.
