From his scathing stand-up comedy to the too-soon canceled "The Job" to the
superb "Rescue Me," Leary never sanitizes his tough-as-nails persona of
trash-talking, screwed-up Irish working stiff. In "Rescue Me," his NY
firefighter boozes, drugs and womanizes himself to the edge and back, haunted by
ghosts from 9/11, his shattered family and ... a hard-partying Jesus.
Somehow, Leary mines saving humor from this acid-tongued loser. He hits bottom
when, in drunken despair, he drenches himself in vodka and starts to flick his
Bic. But even on his best days, Tommy is still a flayed soul, halfway along the
road to hell. |
