Stardust6:45 PM, SHOA fallen star that takes human form (Claire Danes) is the object of multiple pursuits in director Matthew Vaughn's reasonably fanciful version of the Neil Gaiman fantasy novel. A young man (Charlie Cox) wants the star as evidence that the woman he loves (Sienna Miller) should marry him, while a genuine witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) sees the star as a means of staying young forever. Robert De Niro, Mark Strong and Jason Flemyng also star. Ian McKellen narrates.
Disney Prep & Landing8:00 PM, ABCSanta's elves suffer job burnout, too. In this charming animated special, Dave Foley gives voice to Wayne, a member of the elite elf team that prepares for and oversees Santa's arrival at children's houses. He was hoping for a promotion; instead, he has to stay where he is and train an annoyingly overzealous new assistant (voice of Derek Richardson). Of course, no Christmas special would be complete without a crisis and a lesson to be learned.
Supernatural9:00 PM, CWTalk about a bad Santa! In this episode, Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles) are checking out some killings in which the victims were yanked up chimneys -- ouch! The perp turns out to be a demon who's sort of a Bizarro St. Nick. The brothers are at odds about how to handle Christmas; Dean wants a good old-fashioned celebration, since he won't be around next year, but Sam is in denial in "A Very Supernatural Christmas."
Star Wars IV: A New Hope6:00 PM, SPIKEThe 1977 science-fiction classic -- which has spawned sequels, prequels, spinoffs and enough merchandise to fill several Imperial cruisers -- remains a treat for all ages. As rebels battle a totalitarian galactic regime, the war finally reaches an isolated farm boy (Mark Hamill), whose connection to the struggle turns out more personal than he ever imagined. Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Peter Cushing co-star.
Bones8:00 PM, FOXPop princess Cyndi Lauper guest stars as Angela's (Michaela Conlin) psychic, Avalon Harmonia, who alerts a skeptical Brennan and Booth (Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz) to the presence of a mass grave beneath a fountain. TJ Thyne, John Francis Daley and Tamara Taylor also star in "Harbingers in a Fountain."
It's a Wonderful Life8:00 PM, NBCYou know the story: Small-town guy George Bailey defers one big dream after another to stay home, marry local girl and run family business. Facing financial ruin, he's pulled from suicidal despair by an angel who shows him what a terrible place the world would be if he'd never lived. Hey, his small life made a pretty big impact after all! James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore star, with Henry Travers as the angel whose work with George earns him a promotion.
Fred Claus8:00 PM, MAXYes, Virginia, there is yet another terrible movie about Santa Claus -- or, in this case, his irritating little brother (Vince Vaughn), a ne'er-do-well who wants to hit up his saintly sibling (Paul Giamatti) for a loan. Forget "Noel," just say "El, NO!" to this cinematic lump of coal, which also stars Miranda Richardson, Kathy Bates and Rachel Weisz.
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back9:00 PM, SPIKEDarker in tone than either "Star Wars" or "The Return of the Jedi," this 1980 drama follows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to the home world of Jedi Master Yoda (performed by Frank Oz), where he learns the ways of the Force and faces his inner demons. In the meantime, Han Solo and Princess Leia (Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher) dodge bounty hunters in a chase that ultimately reunites them with Luke, who discovers a terrifying family secret.
The Mentalist10:00 PM, CBSPatrick (Simon Baker) and the team investigate when a mobster in witness protection is murdered. See, clearly they should have called in U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon from USA Network's "In Plain Sight." This kind of thing almost never happens on her watch. Frankie Ingrassia, Fredric Lehne and Dan Lauria guest star in "Red Sauce"; Robin Tunney also stars.
Christmas at St. Olaf: Where Peace and Love and Ho10:00 PM, PBSIn an encore telecast from 2007, the choirs and orchestra of Minnesota's St. Olaf College blend excerpts from Handel's "Messiah," Mendelssohn's "St. Paul" and Honegger's "King David" with specially commissioned works in a program that explores the notion of "global citizenship" and the spiritual dimension of the holiday season. First held in 1912, the St. Olaf Christmas Festival is one of America's oldest musical yuletide celebrations.
