As the series went on, less attention was paid to Cliff and Claire's careers and focus was shifted to the hectic lives of the Huxtable... Denise graduated from high school and chose to attend her father's alma mater, Hillman College. This set up a successful spin-off, "A Different World." Lisa Bonet, however, only lasted one season with the new series. Following some travelling abroad, Denise later returned "home" with a new husband (Joseph C. Phillips) and his precocious daughter (Raven-Symone).<#$>Meanwhile, Theo graduated from high school (despite troubles with dyslexia) and enrolled in New York University -- later becoming a mentor for inner-city youth. Vanessa graduated and went to college, and Rudy entered junior high. Towards the end of "The Cosby Show's" run, Bonet left the series -- but Raven-Symone, as her stepdaughter Olivia, stayed. In addition, Claire's second cousin Pam (Erika Alexander) moved in, providing a fresh "'90s" perspective on high school. In the series finale, Theo graduated from NYU, and Cliff and Claire broke the "fourth wall" by leaving their "home" through the studio audience. Show History:"The Cosby Show" is widely considered to be the most popular sitcom of the 1980's. When it first premiered in 1984, some TV experts had been sounding the death knell of the "situation comedy." However, in the series' first season, it finished an astonishing second place. It remained at the top of the Nielsen chart for nearly its entire run. Its spin-off, "A Different World," lasted a respectable six years.<#$>Bill Cosby created the series, which mirrored many aspects of his real life, with producing partners Ed. Weinberger and Michael Lesson. Unbeknownst to many, Cosby has a Ph.D. in education, and hoped to create a sitcom that would extol the virtues of family values with warmth and humor. Many feel he did, despite criticism of the Huxtables' obvious wealth from some members of the African-American community.<#$>By the end of the '80s, thanks in part to "The Cosby Show," there were more sitcoms on television than at any other time in the medium's history.
