Posted: 5/14/2009A review of Drawn Together by PanSatyric
Oscar Wilde once wrote, "Give a man a mask, and he'll tell you the truth"-- and the inspired ensemble pandemonium of "Drawn Together" holds a brilliantly bulletproof satiric mirror-mask up to Humanity, for both better and warts. "Family Guy" is great, and "American Dad" is even better-- but "Drawn Together" even edges out "South Park" with its brilliant writing, amazing animation and superb vocal performances. Laser-sharp, lightning-fast and with virtuoso comedic timing, the show constantly makes me burst out loud laughing, and drop my jaw in awe and wonder by its courage and conviction. This flawless gem of a show actually taps fully into the ancient esoteric tradition of the "Sacred Clown"-- spiritual therapists who use outrageously perceptive concepts, props and performances to blast away at the psychopathically cowardly and hypocritical Puritan sexual ethics which afflict this country. I grew up Gay in the '50's and '60's, and was exactly Xandir's age-- 19-- when Gay Liberation roared in 1969, which was like going from almost dying in a desert to the tropical wonders of Polynesia. Xandir deals with many of the same heartaches and challenges that I did, and I can smell the comedic brilliance of Jack Plotnick all over him. Hell, I'm still trying to recover from Jack's beyond-astounding "Evie" in "Girls Will Be Girls". But to everyone at "Drawn Together"-- thank you, thank you, thank you. It'll live forever.
