Calling the Shots
On the "The X
Factor," judges do way more than offer up trite words of affirmation or
gentle rebuke. They actually take an active role in mentoring the contestants --
choosing their songs, shaping arrangements and onstage style, and coaching them
through their ... more performance choices. As such, Simon and company will be completely invested in
the hopefuls in a way you'd never see over at "Idol."
The result should make for interesting viewing: Not only will the judges'
expertise ensure more polished performances, but their individual involvement
with their own cadre of contestants (each judge gets assigned to a group of six
acts) creates a mini-competition of sorts among the judges. This arrangement
will necessarily impact how Simon and the others interact with one another on
the judging panel when giving feedback. Watching Simon needle a contestant is
one thing, but watching him jibe his fellow judges could be priceless.
