"Next"
Not to be outdone by its sister network VH1, MTV has always offered the
finest in morally wayward programming that opts to playfully exploit the
whimsical hookup culture of generations Y and Z. "Next" was in
particularly dubious taste, but also uncannily entertaining, ... morethanks largely to
the willing self-parody of its contestants. Basically, a lucky guy or girl --
and, to its credit, "Next" did feature both hetero- and homosexual couplings --
embarked on mini-dates with three suitors, and narrowed their options by
invoking their "Next" power to veto a boring hang sesh. Even better, intro
videos offered detailed glimpses into each contestant's turn-ons and bugaboos,
like one gentleman caller who declared, "Curvy girls make my junk twitch."
Shockingly, such confessions didn't make us want to call "Next" on the afternoon
reality hit, which endured the length of a presidential tenure.
