"Wizards and Warriors"
Sometimes, a creative brain trust can adapt a famous literary period to the
aesthetic and mores of today and hit pay dirt. Other times, they can produce an
absurd and cartoonish prime-time comedy that's best remembered as a cult
novelty, if it's recollected ... more at all. Take CBS' 1983 failure "Wizards and
Warriors," a high-concept laugher from former "M.A.S.H." and "Golden
Girls" scribe Don Reo and frequent director/ex-"Incredible Hulk" star Bill Bixby, that featured late "Taxi"
alum Jeff Conaway in the lead role. "W&W" was
intended as part satire, part action/fantasy, but was all tacky costumes, crappy
looking dragons and toothless dueling. Actually, in retrospect, maybe it's kind
of awesome. See for yourself.
