while pursuing one of these supernatural threats. While trying to locate their
father, the brothers take up dear old dad's vocation.
Positives: Now in its seventh season, the series heavily
relies on the believable brotherly chemistry between its two stars (Ackles' and
Padalecki's characters bicker as much as they get along), and it is a pretty
original premise for a show. Plus, the show mixes humorous elements in, so the
darker horror aspects aren't too overwhelming.
Negatives: Series creator Eric Kripke left the show to
create a goofy, Web-based spin-off, "Ghostfacers." The show clearly misses his
presence. Also, the show had developed a strong story mythology, one that
explained the brothers' tragic past and provided a way for it to avoid
stand-alone, monster-of-the-week episodes. It has deviated from that
successful formula.
Verdict: Fail. The past two seasons have felt more tired,
more repetitive and considerably less fun than previous ones. Unless the network
can coax Kripke back or get an injection of some fresh blood, this show has
probably run its course. (It's already got enough episodes in the can to qualify
for syndication anyway.)
