"Awake"
(coming in 2012 on NBC)
Watcher: Dave Lake
With NBC in desperate need of a hit, perhaps this could be the smart,
well-executed serial drama it craves. The series, one of the most buzzed-about
of the midseason, follows a police detective who exists in parallel realities ... more
after a nasty car crash, one in which his wife survives and another in which his
teenage son lives. Howard Gordon, who spent time on "24,"
and who most recently created the Showtime series "Homeland," will oversee "Awake," and if anybody can make
this complicated plot appealing to a prime-time audience, it's him. However, NBC
recently shut down production on the series in order to tighten up its story
ideas, which is never a good sign. "It's a very complex show," Gordon told
Vulture, "And since we weren't under any gun in terms of delivering episodes by
a deadline, we asked for [the hiatus]." The show also boasts a terrific
supporting cast, including B.D. Wong, Cherry Jones (a vet of "24") and Wilmer Valderrama.
