"The Secret
Circle" (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW)

While it's got all the pretty people and dastardly deeds of its Kevin
Williamson-produced CW predecessor, "The Vampire
Diaries," the maiden season of "The Secret Circle," while still worth
... morewatching, hasn't gripped audiences in quite the same way. Perhaps it's the fast
and furious death toll, which doesn't allow viewers to relax and latch onto any
one character, for fear that they'll be slaughtered next. Or maybe it's the lack
of diversity. Really, CW? Are all the witches (except one, who might be only
half-white) in Chance Harbor really fresh off the Mayflower? Still, the show
does have a few things going for it: namely Britt Robertson, late of "Life
Unexpected," as newbie witch Cassie, and Gale Harold (whom you loved to hate on "Queer as
Folk") as conflicted grown-up witch Charles Meade. Perhaps in the second
half of the first season (returning in January), we'll be allowed to see more
growth and development -- and diversity, too -- as the show descends into darker
territory.
Verdict: Fail
