"Breaking Bad"
Pigeonhole "Breaking Bad" any way
you want: brutal morality tale, at once scary and funny. Sun-bleached buddy
show. Ironic dirge on the shackles of suburbia. Dark family drama. Unrelenting,
well-paced crime show. Sun-bleached collision between the profoundly ... moreordinary
and banally exotic. Bloodless lament on American health care. Brooding character
study, punctuated by startling outbursts of oddly comic violence. Brilliantly
cast examination of the phenomenon of methamphetamine use in American
life. A grinding, picaresque descent of a brilliant, frustrated, fairly
normal man, empowered by transgression, who passes from the strictures of
moribund American midlife, only to find himself trapped by the enervating
shackles in his new, secret life as a major drug dealer. Of course, these are
just excuses to root -- sincerely and empathetically -- for a guy who produces
and sells the most insidious drug in history. Just relax. Most of all, it's a
wickedly good story.
