Housewife Claire often resents Gloria's ... moreyouthful beauty, Phil can't help but have a harmlessly wandering eye, and perpetually foot-in-mouth Cameron is constantly tip-toeing around racist double entendres (a particularly hilarious meta-joke, given his character's own marginalized status as a ferociously out gay man), but none of it seems to penetrate Gloria's tough exterior: one that sweetly and genuinely disappears quickly around Jay's generosity and protectiveness.
