The show's runaway best character, much like Rodriguez' handling of Manny, is played just nimbly enough by Ty Burrell to avoid slapstick. What's new about Phil, as a well-meaning but goofball dad, is that you never doubt the love and respect ... morehe's earned from his wife and three kids, even if he locks himself in port-o-potties from time to time or is perpetually three iterations behind the hippest teen-speak. His quest for approval from Jay is, at times, genuinely touching, and absolutely true to the uneasy tightrope between father and son-in-law.
