The curtain fell for two contestants last night on "Nashville Star," as Tommy Stanley and Pearl Heart were booted from the singing competition show. The evening was especially short for Stanley, who was informed of his dismissal at the outset of the episode and therefore not given an opportunity to perform. The 23-year-old Navy engineer from Cushing, Okla., had been lambasted all season long by the judges for lacking proper country chops, seen as too "pop" for their tastes. More surprising were the fortunes of female trio Pearl Heart, who, despite solid assurances from the judges last week that they were on the right track, found themselves near teary-eyed at the close of last night's live show. To the surprise of many, host Billy Ray Cyrus announced that the three sisters were headed home. Last week, former beauty queen Alyson Gilbert was eliminated by audience vote.

Performance Recap
There was no shortage of backstage
drama during Week 5 of "Nashville Star." Here's a look at what the remaining
contestants sang and what the judges had to say:
Melissa: It has been a roller coaster ride for this 31-year-old mother of five from Texas. One week, she's battling elimination as one of the bottom two. And the next, she's announced as the top vote-getter. Go figure. Singing that old Anne Murray ditty, "Danny's Song," she turns in a confident performance with a voice that grows more assured with each passing week. Now that her nerves are beginning to subside, it's becoming easy to see -- and hear -- that this Texan's got a real country voice, not to mention a pretty compelling story. Jeffrey Steele said, "I love hearing you sing." Praising her new front-runner status, John Rich commented, "If you're not the best, you're at the very top of the heap."
