Melissa Lawson claimed the title of "Nashville Star" last night on the finale of the reality singing competition show before a live audience at the Acuff Theatre in Nashville, Tenn. The 32-year-old mother of five bested upstart Iowa native Shawn Mayer, who placed third, and seeming front-runner Gabe Garcia, the Tex-Mex cowboy who had captivated audiences with a sound that judges pronounced "authentic country." But it was Melissa's own personal story of redemption and personal growth that compelled viewers more, as she revealed during the course of the season that she had delayed her ambitions of launching a singing career to raise her five kids and that she had lost more than 70 pounds during the course of the competition. After host Billy Ray Cyrus had announced that the audience voters had chosen Melissa as the winner, she performed "What If It All Goes Right," her new downloadable single, which was produced by judge John Rich and which she will perform at the Beijing Olympics on Aug. 12. Lawson also wins a new pickup and a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records.
MSN TV had a chance to sit down with Lawson immediately after the competition. Here's what Lawson had to say about the road ahead:
