At long last, "Lost" is back, moving to 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
After just six episodes, the network gave the show a risky hiatus, but the
producers have let it be known, tantalizingly, that one of "the main
characters" will be killed off in the remaining episodes of Season 3. So
far, we've seen the demise of Shannon, Boone, Ana-Lucia, Libby and Mr.
Eko, some of them played by actors who, coincidentally or not, tangled
with the law off set. And Matthew Fox, who plays Jack,
has mouthed off in the press, which could anger producers enough to write
him out. But death can take anyone in the "Lost" cast, so here's how we
think it could shake out:
Message board: Who do you think is next to
go?

 |
3 to 1: Most Vulnerable to the Grim Reaper
Charlie (Dominic Monaghan)
: His plotlines have been pretty limited, especially since
the demise of Mr. Eko. He's also an audience fave, so there'd be
some shock value, though the real-life romance between Monaghan and
Evangeline Lilly (Kate)
might have producers thinking twice about alienating their leading
lady.
Claire (Emilie de
Ravin): Adorable, but she's done her job by having her
baby on the island, don't you think?
Sun (Yunjin Kim):
This would hurt, because there's a lot of her backstory that could
affect Jin, Michael and the rest of the cast. Plus, her sensitivity,
nuance, bilingualism and sailing abilities are all things the other
cast members -- and we -- would miss. And then there's the baby.
Just the kind of expectations producers like to dash.
Juliet (Elizabeth
Mitchell): Please? We already can't stand her. She's
the Goebbels-as-demented-cheerleader to Ben's Hitler.
Alex (Tania Raymonde):
She looked like a goner at the end of Episode 6, anyway, though
we'll feel cheated if it's only Alex, since she wouldn't really be
considered a "major character."
Sawyer (Josh Holloway):
This is a wild-card, but think about it. It'd be shocking, it would
make Kate reel in unforeseen directions (back to Jack? away from
everyone?) and it would reinforce one of "Lost's" early cardinal
(carnal) rules: Have sex. Die.

5 to 1: Safe -- for Now
Hurley (Jorge Garcia):
He's the Everyman the fans adore, so they won't mess with him ...
for now. But his role as the island's geek-Greek chorus may not be
needed indefinitely. Dude.
Jack (Matthew Fox):
Yeah, Fox has been an ingrate in recent interviews, and producers
have already suggested Jack will be missing from "several" episodes
of the remainder of Season 3. It's probably because the storyline
will be returning to the "main" island and not to the Alcatraz
prison where Jack, Kate and Sawyer have been held captive. Plus,
they want to tantalize us with the Jack-Kate unrequited thing.
Jin (Daniel Dae Kim):
We'd hate to see it happen, but it could result in interesting
character development of Sun (producers would never take them
both).
Walt and/or Michael (Malcolm David Kelley/Harold
Perrineau): If they come back, which they surely will,
these two are fairly safe. The shock value of offing the only kid
would be huge, and Michael may have more people from both camps
after him after his betrayals. (A side note: What about Vincent? Why
does that dog always look borderline fat? It can't be because he's
feasting on rotting bones in the jungle -- or can it?)

15 to 1: Safe for Another Season or
Two
Ben/Henry Gale (Michael
Emerson): He's too deliciously Snidely Whiplash-ey to
be done in just yet. Unless ... the mysterious Jacob, the
mastermind behind the even more mysterious "list," is the real
ringleader and we're about to be introduced to someone even more
nefarious.
Locke (Terry O'Quinn):
Survival skills, personal demons galore, the philosopher of the
group -- he'll be around for a while longer. Let's hope his legs
don't give out again.
Sayid (Naveen Andrews):
OK, there's no real reason Sayid needs to stay indefinitely, other
than he's such a hottie, not to mention a cool character. Plus, we
have to believe there's going to be occasions for deliberate torture
from time to time.
Kate (Evangeline Lilly): We predict the
sweat-slicked beauty is going to be with us for a while, as it
becomes clear she's the sun around which most of the planets circle.
As the series' central love object, she can't be easily replaced
and, besides, we're still learning her creepy backstory (way to blow
up your dad, Monica).
