Who needs a judgmental Santa deciding whether you've been naughty or nice
when you have generous celebrities making a list and checking it twice? Seems a
few stars are getting into the holiday spirit a little early by giving -- and in
some cases, getting -- gifts.
Let's start on the benevolent end of the spectrum with Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, who made good on their promise to
donate items from their recent "Wizard of Oz"-themed baby shower to the Los Angeles
Free Clinic.
Joel Madden and Nicole Richie launch the Richie Madden Children's
Foundation in Los Angeles on Dec. 3. |
On Monday, the stork-preparing pair surprised 100 new and expectant
underprivileged moms with more than $200,000 worth of baby swag, including
essentials such as cribs, monitors, strollers, blankets, bottles, diaper bags,
car seats, baby carriers, books, toys and more (much of the loot was donated by
sponsors).
"Everything they got, we got, so everything that will be in their nursery
will be in our nursery," the glowingly swollen starlet told the press (via
People). "The looks on their faces were priceless. Some of them didn't even
believe us [when they saw the gifts]. They thought we were joking."
According to the Good Charlotte front man, their newly formed Richie-Madden
Children's Foundation is a way to make sure their ankle-biter, who's due to
arrive in January, feels connected to and responsible for the community.
Besides, he says, "Sometimes people don't want to believe that me and Nicole
are just a young couple having a baby and we're really excited. We don't really
get to share our lives with people. It's nice to connect with people on a real
level."
Not connecting on a real level?
David Beckham, whom the London Daily Mirror says
forked over some serious cash to guarantee wife Victoria and her fellow Spice Girls sparkled on the first night of their recently
launched world tour.
The soccer star reportedly presented spouse Posh, along with Scary, Sporty,
Ginger and Baby, with $100,000 worth of diamond bracelets before they hit the
stage in Vancouver, Canada, on Sunday.
"He knows I'm really nervous about him seeing me back onstage, so he bought
us all these bracelets for good luck," Mrs. Beckham said before the show. "It's
like the old days. David spent a lot of time around the girls when we first got
together -- it's as though he married all of us. He's the original Spice Boy."
The bracelets must have been charmed, because reviews for their reunion have
been surprisingly strong, with the Vancouver Sun enthusing, "It was about great
entertainment. And the girls delivered the spice."
 Eva
Longoria also got this cute little Bambi award for free. She later had to
break the news its mother was killed by a hunter. Then she treated it to
Louboutins. |
And finally, we end on an avaricious note with Eva Longoria's whirlwind weekend in Manhattan. The
New York Daily News reports the "Desperate Housewives"
star descended on the Big Apple with seven girlfriends for a swag grab of "goods
and services" valued at more than $100,000.
On their schedule were stops at swanky salons and shops, including Coach,
Henri Bendel and Saks, which reportedly gave Eva a $1,500 pair of Christian
Louboutin boots (an insider says she generously sprung for deluxe footwear for
her friends). Along the way, says the paper, they collected freebies ranging
from sunglasses to chocolates to jewelry.
