Nicole Richie may not be a role model for how to have the perfect pregnancy, but she's fuming mad over claims that her Joel Madden-spawned bun in the oven is being subjected to secondhand smoke.

According to New York Post gossip veteran Cindy Adams, the swelling starlet was seen sucking on a cancer stick outside a pair of Manhattan eateries, once accompanied by her Good Charlotte front man fiancé.

Trouble is, Adams doesn't specify when this purported puffing took place, and Richie, who recently returned to Los Angeles after tagging along with an on-tour Madden to Australia (with a stop in Thailand), hasn't been spotted in New York since early September, when she was front and center at Fashion Week.

It's a geographic discrepancy her rep points out to "Extra," labeling the report "irresponsible and untrue."

As for Nicole, who once played a pregnant smoker for laughs on "The Simple Life" by strapping on a faux belly, lighting up a cigarette and enjoying the reaction of disapproving onlookers, she rails that the smoke signals are seriously crossed.

"It's really very sad and hurtful that journalists don't believe in checking facts before writing false and unsubstantiated stories about my health and my pregnancy," she sniffled in a statement to "Access Hollywood." "The healthy birth of my child is my number one priority."

Richie, who is believed to be about seven months along, added to her growing family during an outing to a Los Angeles Petco on Tuesday, picking out a goldfish. She also showed off her expanding midsection to shutterbugs, who trailed her as she headed to lunch with "Hills" pals Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge.

Meanwhile, the designer behind the capacious, belly-camouflaging ensembles Jennifer Lopez is sporting on her tour with husband Marc Anthony is flapping his gums about her delicate but still stubbornly unconfirmed condition.

On Tuesday, People quizzed Roberto Cavalli on what it's like to outfit his celebrity clientele, prompting him to spill, "Well Jennifer Lopez, at this moment, she requests something very special because she is waiting for the baby."

Adds the loose-lipped designer, whose use of the singular bambino seems to call into question those rumors of a double stork delivery, "It is so complicated because every week she is getting bigger."

And finally, in still more unconfirmed but bulbously obvious baby news, Christina Aguilera is doing everything short of wearing a baby on board sign around her neck. The petite pop princess stepped out on Tuesday styling yet another outfit that accentuated her mountainous midsection.

She and husband Jordan Bratman browsed cribs, teddy bears and toys at tony Los Angeles baby boutique NoMi, the latest in a string of ankle-biter-geared shopping expeditions they've taken in recent weeks.
