| Real Women: The most fully realized women in prime time |
Amy Gray ("Judging Amy")
Amy Brenneman's Judge Gray was a family court judge,
divorced, with a child who, if too precious to stomach in the early seasons,
eventually started to act out. Brenneman's Gray was a refreshing character: she
argued with her mother, she drank too much, she had a healthy libido, and
sometimes her hair looked simply awful. We bought her single-mom, work ethic
struggles, her falling for the wrong guys and her fights with her siblings, but
it was her contentious interactions with her often prickly mother (Tyne Daly, who has a history of playing believable
women) that seemed to draw viewers most. While we may avoid inciting an
intellectual battle with our own moms at any cost, watching Judge Amy do it sure
was cathartic. |
