"The Cosby Show"
(1984-1992)
Bill Cosby, the go-to guy for networks
in trouble, played Dr. Cliff Huxtable, ostensibly an obstetrician, though Cosby
didn't do much doctoring. Mostly, he just sat in a big chair and scowled at his
brood of five kids, fuming over their inability to live up to his confusing
values. An African-American variation on "Father Knows Best," "The Cosby
Show" was surprisingly critical of African-American culture and ostentatiously
promoted values that coincided with Cosby's own apparent philosophy and
lifestyle. Nevertheless, the show was noble in attempting to offer up positive
role models. |
