Phillip Phillips underwent eight surgeries during 'American Idol'

Idolator

You may have been surprised by Phillip Phillips' "American Idol" win, but the singer's father, also named Phillip Phillips, revealed an even bigger shocker: The 21-year-old Georgian underwent eight kidney surgeries during his tenure on the 11th season of "Idol."

Bing: 'Idol' finale ratings plummet

"He's been doing [well], but it's just grueling hours and it's just amazing what he's done through the journey," the senior Phillips told People. "Eight operations since we started 'American Idol.' ... He's hitting 50 percent, but he's still up there swinging away."

In addition to snagging the "Idol" crown this year, Phillips achieved another victory yesterday, when his coronation song, "Home," rose to the top of the iTunes download chart. Today the plucky guitar jam is still sitting in the peak position at the online music retailer.

But according to People, before Phillips can head out on the annual Idols Live tour, he needs to undergo another surgery.

"I'm going to get some surgery done, so I'm going to get all better for the tour," the singer told reporters following his "Idol" triumph the other day. "It was very tough [getting through the season]. I had great doctors and great people surrounding me [who] really helped out, so it's just a blessing to be here."

Will you be heading out to see Phillip and the Season 11 singers when they hit the road this summer?

there is a pureness about Phillips music that I loved right out of the gate and I could see that he has so much more depth to him than the others; he's an old soul and we love that about him.  We supported him all season and prayed he'd stay strong enough to make it thru.  The boy is charming, because he's just Phillip....no hype, no fancy clothes, no slick hair do.....LOVE IT !!!

To Phillip's credit, he kept these surgeries under raps until the competition was over.  A true competitor, letting his talent carry the day.  I wish him well.

J are you serious... Joshua and Jessica were better singers but I wouldn't drop a dime on either for their albums(nor would most people).  Phillip is an original, he has a sound that is unique and people love it.  Time will tell, I'm putting my money on Phillip

I think this goes to show you that his win was valid.  Josh had enormous talent but he is too gospel for mainstream and Jessica although an amazing voice I think isn't sure of who she is yet... Philip knew who he was from the start and didn't change that.  To be so ill and still get out there and perform week after week says an awful lot about who he is.  I am happy he won and I understand he may not be everyone's cup of tea but it shouldn't go unrecognized the triumphs he has had throughout this journey.  You don't have to like someone but you can have RESPECT for them as a person!!
