Matt Lauer mocks Ryan Seacrest 'Today' speculation

By Tim Molloy
The Wrap

Matt Lauer doesn't seem to be taking the talk of Ryan Seacrest replacing him very seriously.

The "Today" host joked about Seacrest joining the show at a celebration Thursday celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Search: What news magazine show is reportedly courting Lauer?

"The people in the room right now. their names are so closely associated with the 'Today' show," Lauer said at the party, according to the New York Post. "Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters. Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley. Deborah Norville. Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric ... Ryan Seacrest."

The room exploded in laughter, the Post reported.

NBC executives have said they hope Lauer will remain with "Today" at the end of his contract. But the Wall Street Journal reported in December that NBCUniversal was courting Seacrest as a possible replacement for Lauer if Lauer gives up his "Today" job.

Seacrest already works for NBCUniversal company as a host of E! News. At a panel for "American Idol" last Sunday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, he declined to comment on the "Today" report.

Though his contract with "Idol" is up after this season, he seemed eager to return to the Fox show.

"I can't imagine life without 'American Idol,'" he said.

I have to agree with "mitch rapp"...I turn on the news to hear the news...not news of Lindsey Lohan's repeated drug related episodes, Beonce´s baby bump, delivery, baby's name, blah, blah, blah.  So boring!  Please Today Show...lets get back to the news!

NBC is almost as sad as FOX.  Who gives a rip about the celeb du jour?  TODAY was once about important things and real news.  Now it's mainly about who the simple minded should be worshipping THIS week.  Beyonce had a baby.  Big deal.  Kardashians have large posteriors.  The Fornication Family spits out another one.  THIS is NEWS?  They might as well let a lightweight like Seacrest take over.  I hear CBS is taking a hard look at revamping.  The timing for their move might be spot on, unless they focus on all things Bieber and the latest fad diets.

----Okay, I hate to agree with Mitt Romney on anything  ---- but one thing he is dead on right about is that most of the people in this Country are "Envious" of people who are Rich, and famous, and glamourous and living the glitzy wonderful lifestyle.  This is why the Real Hard news shows have turned into "Celebrity pep rally - News shows."  This is why the Kardashians, the Housewives, and many othe reality shows are so popular now.  Sad  that they have to report on Beyonce's baby bump, and Lindseys latest rehab incident, etc. . . This is what gets them the ratings they need. Truly sad.

Here's a thought, replace Lauer with someone who is objective.
