HBO's Most Iconic Shows

'The Sopranos' (1999)

On its surface, a drama about New Jersey mobsters seemed all too familiar. Besides, what could creator David Chase do that Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola hadn't already done so eloquently in their mob masterpieces "Good Fellas" and "The Godfather"? A lot, it turns out. "The Sopranos" portrayed the difficulty of heading up two families and the toll it takes on the head of both, Tony Soprano, played to perfection by James Gandolfini. The show took home a pair of Emmys for Outstanding Drama and was nominated in the category every single year it was eligible. Not a series to go out with a whimper, the show's final scene will be watched and debated for as long as people are studying television.
