Generally speaking, midseason TV replacements are the prime-time equivalent
of fourth-quarter subs in a basketball rout. In other words, when a series helps
launch ... more a network's season but fails to win in the ratings, another one on the
bench often gets its shot. The expectation in both instances is usually to stop
the bleeding, but in some cases, the timing is serendipity and a new star or
cultural phenomenon is born.
ABC's "The
River" is likely to be remembered among the latter.
