High school crews we'd love to hang out with
By Kenny Herzog
In the words of Adam Sandler's immortal Billy Madison, "Back to school/Back to school/To prove to dad/That I'm not a fool." Or whatever lyric that first week of cracking books and/or dropping kids off at some educational institution brings to mind. Children, college students and especially motivated adults nationwide are officially in the midst of yet another semester under the guidance of mentors and beholden to the fickle master that is homework. Teachers, for that matter, tend to get sentimental as summer passes the seasonal torch to autumn. We all get a little nostalgic come the early days of September, which is why it's no wonder we seek out our favorite shows about school-age kids in syndication or in our Blu-ray collections.
Among those selections, which range from the stoner dramedy of "Freaks and Geeks" to the, well, stoner absurdity of "That '70s Show," there are fictional towns populated by groups of friends we've come to accept as an extension of our own. Who among us hasn't fantasized about hanging out with, say, Raj and Rerun at Rob's Place or Kurt and Quinn at McKinley High's extramural glee club sessions? That, naturally, is a rhetorical question. And here's a few words in recognition of those kid cliques from TV that we wish we could hang out with.
