When nominees from the same movie compete
By Glenn Kenny Special to MSN Movies
Sometimes a movie is so powerful, and boasts such a formidable cast, that the
awards-giving powers that be have no choice but to put actors in an awkward
position. It's always "just an honor to be nominated," as they say, but it's a
trifle awkward when your competition is more than just a general colleague, but
somebody you acted with in the same movie. It doesn't happen all that often, but
it happens. It could have potentially happened this year, but didn't. It was
anticipated that Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman would face each other at
the Golden Globes for their powerhouse performances in Paul Thomas Anderson's
"The Master," but instead Phoenix was nominated for
Best Actor and Hoffman for Best Supporting Actor.
