Here are 10 small-screen Irish families that we've loved making
part of ours
By Kenny Herzog Special to MSN TV
As St. Patrick's Day approaches, visions of clovers and Celtic crosses begin
dancing in many people's heads. In our consciousness, images of television's
great Irish ... more come to mind, whether it's hard-living "The Wire" detective
Jimmy McNulty or resilient "South Park" tyke Kenny
McCormick. We also can't help but confront the reality that Irish TV personas,
like most ethnicities or nationalities, are often limited to stereotyped
characterizations. In this case, that can run the gamut from tough-talking
street cop to fun-loving boozehound, with some occasional nonsense about
rainbows and men in tiny green tuxedos in there somewhere.
But true Irish pride, as is also the case for most folks, begins and ends
with family. Not that there can't be a clan of tough-talking street cops, à la
the Reagans on "Blue Bloods" (Fridays
at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS). So as March 17 descends and we celebrate both the
great Patron Saint Pat and more than 150 years of contributions to American
life, here are 10 small-screen Irish families that we've loved making part of
ours.
