| Former '90s sitcom stars who've found a second life on
cable
By Kenny Herzog There once was a time where being featured on a sitcom meant your next step was feature-film success. One need look no further than Will Smith, Jennifer Aniston or, er, Tom Arnold? Well, there are exceptions. But over the past decade, it's become increasingly de rigueur for actors to head from network stability to the creative Wild West that is originally scripted cable television. Cases in point: ageless Betty White and everyone's beloved "Nanny" star, Fran Drescher, who's making her own TV Land comeback with the premiere of "Happily Divorced." Not that one can blame White, Drescher or their peers. Who wants to deal with the fickle trends of big-studio releases and "Entourage"-esque Hollywood politics, when the likes of HBO, AMC, Showtime and TNT are producing eccentric, intelligent material that's customized around their talents and actually offers a bit of job security? Here are nine other examples of once-pre-eminent network sitcom actors and actresses who've found new wind in their sails on the higher reaches of the cable guide. (TV Land) |
