Greatest Sidekicks of All Time
Our favorite crime-fighting partners on television

By Michaela Sinclair

In 1887, "consulting detective" Sherlock Holmes made his fictional debut in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first novel. Three more novels, dozens of short stories and 125 years later, Sherlock Holmes has been reincarnated in multiple forms on both film and television. With each rendition of the famed detective, his legacy cannot live on without his most trusted confidant, close friend, crime-solving partner and ultimate sidekick, Dr. John Watson.

This fall brings the Sherlock Holmes series "Elementary," airing Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. In this adaptation, Jonny Lee Miller stars as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes and recovering addict forced to live with Dr. Joan Watson (played by Lucy Liu) in Manhattan. Sherlock returns to work as a police consultant and, naturally, Dr. Watson becomes a worthy ally with her vast medical knowledge and investigative prowess.
