The best of basic cable and network TV

In the past, Emmy darling Julianna Margulies revealed
she's sick of hearing how great "The Good Wife" is "for
a network show." She has a point. HBO, Showtime and other premium channels get
serious mileage out of their license to get dirty, and streaming sites are
changing the landscape with binge-worthy offerings like "House of Cards" and
"Orange Is the New Black." But that doesn't mean basic cable isn't pulling its
weight. A healthy list of shows offer premium TV without the premium price and
push boundaries without flashing private parts and dropping F-bombs. Some
receive Emmy attention for their efforts, while others remain on the periphery,
but all prove that premium and online liberation are not the only roads to
quality TV. In fact, MSN TV was hard-pressed to keep our list of the best from
basic cable short. Which shows just barely nudged fan favorites like
"Grimm," "Scandal" and "The Following" off?
