It's a brave new world on cable TV. Basic-package channels like AMC and FX have commandeered a good chunk of prestige away from HBO and Showtime. Meanwhile, both of those longstanding powerhouses continue pushing back with stellar programming, all while Cinemax, Starz and other subscriber networks bolster their repertoire of original series (even if, as with Starz, they're kind of in between quality flagships). Oh, and let's not forget Netflix and other streaming and/or Web-based services' overnight intrusion into this Wild West.

It's enough to make one wonder what shows, if any, are actually worth forking over extra monthly scratch for? It's just our two cents, but here are 11 potential answers to that very valid inquiry, along with three reasons why they justify your investment by providing quality television and ensuring you're not poor on timely pop-culture conversation.
