'Game of Thrones' upsets 'Breaking Bad' in Facebook Emmy predictions

Emmy winners based on social media comments project underdog victories

By Tony Maglio

In between posting Ice Bucket Challenges, Facebook users unwittingly have been predicting winners for Monday's 66th annual Emmy Awards hosted by Seth Meyers.

The social media giant compiled the number of mentions in posts and comments for certain Emmy nominees. The data below represents the time period between July 10 — when the noms were announced — through Monday, Aug. 18.

If Facebook mentions mattered to the Academy, "Game of Thrones" would beat "Breaking Bad," "House of Cards," etc. for Outstanding Drama Series, and "Orange Is the New Black" would top "The Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family," et al. for Comedy Series.

Also, Kevin Spacey would upset Matthew McConaughey for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with Kerry Washington besting Spacey's co-star Robin Wright in the actress category.

Finally, Louis CK would bring home an Outstanding Comedy Actor trophy instead of Ricky Gervais, while Melissa McCarthy would take the gold over Amy Poehler.
